Chianti Classico 2018 – Fattoria San Giusto a Rentennano
Chianti Classico 2018 – Fattoria San Giusto in Rentennano
It’s a day to remember. Paradoxically because it is the first time that I am disappointed, even if only partially, by a bottle from one of my favorite wineries. Which obviously remains so.
From Gaiole in Chianti
Sangiovese and Canaiolo in small part, aging for 11 months in tonneaux and barriques.
Dark ruby colour, on the nose I find continuity with what I have drunk over the years. Memories of berries, violets, undergrowth, blood and spicy notes. Balsamic and openly alcoholic.
However, on the palate it appears split. Although it suggests full maturation and offers bright acidity and a tannin that could be defined as exact, in shape and strength, a good concentration, rich taste, it brings with it an alcoholic charge that does not seem to be an integral part of the liquid. Rather than coming from inside the wine, it seems that the alcohol envelops it. And it is a sensation that accompanies the entire time the bottle finishes, but it ends with a bit of effort.
This makes me even more sorry. For wasted potential. The high alcohol content of the wines certainly cannot be blamed on the companies that are the first to face the difficulties caused by climate change and it is a misadventure that we encounter with ever increasing frequency.
San Giusto a Rentennano remains for me on the podium of Chianti Classico companies, but this bottle leaves you speechless.
