La bottiglia si presenta pesantissima e completamente nera (compresa etichetta, controetichetta e ceralacca). Appare solo in controluce l’incisione di una formula matematica ed il nome The Schubert Theorem. Questa presentazione dall’aspetto enigmatico e fascinoso, ha sortito in me un “effetto aspettativa” decisamente elevato. Il quale è stato ampiamente superato, oserei dire surclassato, dall’esperienza sensoriale di questo Syrah in purezza delle Barossa Valley.

Il vino si presenta con un compatto ed assolutamente impenetrabile rosso porpora scuro, inchiostrato e denso. Il naso è un esplosione di complessità ed intensità che è possibile avvertire nitidamente anche a 20 cm dal calice. Piccoli frutti rossi e neri in composta (in particolare mirtillo e mora), pepe nero, radice di liquerizia, tabacco, cioccolato, torrefazione, inchiostro.

In bocca il vino è dirompente. La concentrazione è oltre i livelli massimi sperimentati, viscosa, totalizzante e suadente. Caldo e morbido prende spazio nel palato in maniera inaspettatamente dinamica e fluente. L’alcool è eccezionalmente gestito ed integrato a tannini di velluto, definitissimi, multidimensionali. Non tardano ad arrivare, in soccorso alla dinamica del sorso, una bellissima acidità ed una buona sapidità, che regalano al vino bevibilità e scioltezza, sopratutto in relazione alla tipologia di vino di cui stiamo parlando. Persistenza importante e finale lunghissimo, con un ritorno coerente sul frutto scuro (questa volta fresco) e sulla spezia dolce.

Questo Syrah in purezza (proveniente da uno dei migliori produttori del paese, all’interno della zona più vocata in assoluto) credo sia assolutamente sconosciuto e pressoché introvabile in Italia.

Io l’ho ricevuto in regalo, ed è stata un esperienza entusiasmante. Premetto che non sono un appassionato della tipologia dei vini iper-concetrati e “muscolosi”, né del vitigno (fatta ovvia eccezione dei grandi Syrah del Rodano). Inoltre, prima di questo vino, la mia esperienza con i vini australiani era relegata a qualche bottiglia di basso profilo, facilmente reperibile nella GDO. Questo per dire che una certa dose di preconcetto era presente in me. Ed è stata spazzata via al primo sorso.

La qualità del vino è assolutamente eccezionale, un vino di cui è difficile non infatuarsi quasi in tempo reale e tenerlo a lungo impresso nella memoria sensoriale. Un vino seducente e sensuale, ma mai semplice o monocorde, anzi direi stratificato e vivissimo. Certamente non è un vino quotidiano, né per tipologia e caratteristiche, né tanto meno per il prezzo, decisamente elevato.

È però un esperienza veramente interessante che consiglio a chi abbia passione per il genere o per chi sia decisamente incuriosito dal cimentarsi con un vino Australiano di fascia alta. A mio modesto parere (ma forse anche secondo JS che nel 2020 lo ha posto al 4° gradino della sua classifica dei migliori 100) questo Syrah non sfigurerebbe se confrontato alla cieca con molti blasonati Hermitage del Rodano Settentrionale.

This bottle is very heavy and completely black (including label, back label and sealing wax). Only against the light appears the engraving of a mathematical formula and the name The Schubert Theorem. This presentation, with its enigmatic and fascinating appearance, had a decidedly high “expectation effect” in me. Which was largely surpassed, dare I say outclassed, by the sensorial experience of this pure Syrah from the Barossa Valley.

The wine presents a compact and absolutely impenetrable dark purple red, inky and dense. The nose is an explosion of complexity and intensity that can be clearly perceived even 20 cm from the glass. Small red and black fruits in compote (especially blueberry and blackberry), black pepper, liquorice root, tobacco, chocolate, roasting, ink.

In the mouth the wine is explosive. The concentration is beyond the maximum levels experienced, viscous, all-encompassing and persuasive. Warm and soft, it takes up space on the palate in an unexpectedly dynamic and flowing way. The alcohol is exceptionally managed and integrated with velvety, very defined, multidimensional tannins. A beautiful acidity and a good flavor are not long in arriving to help the dynamics of the sip, which give the wine drinkability and looseness, especially in relation to the type of wine we are talking about. Important persistence and a very long finish, with a consistent return to the dark fruit (this time fresh) and the sweet spice.

This pure Syrah (coming from one of the best producers in the country, in the most suitable area of ​​all) I believe is absolutely unknown and almost impossible to find in Italy.

I received it as a gift, and it was an exciting experience. Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of the type of hyper-concentrated and “muscular” wines, nor of the grape variety (with the obvious exception of the great Syrahs from the Rhône). Furthermore, before this wine, my experience with Australian wines was relegated to a few low profile bottles, easily available in large-scale retail trade. This is to say that a certain amount of preconception was present in me. And it was blown away at the first sip.

The quality of the wine is absolutely exceptional, a wine with which it is difficult not to become infatuated almost in real time and keep it imprinted in the sensorial memory for a long time. A seductive and sensual wine, but never simple or monotonous, indeed I would say layered and very lively. It is certainly not an everyday wine, neither for its type and characteristics, nor for the decidedly high price.

However it is a truly interesting experience that I recommend to those who have a passion for the genre or to those who are decidedly intrigued by trying their hand at a high-end Australian wine. In my humble opinion (but perhaps also according to JS who in 2020 placed it on the 4th step of its ranking of the best 100) this Syrah would not look out of place if blindly compared with many of the famous Hermitages of the Northern Rhône.
